Hans Wegner Chair
Description
The Hans Wegner caned back chair in teak, c. mid 20th century, earned its name from the gently curved, rounded armrests that resemble a cigar. Hans Wegner is often referred to as the “King of Chairs.” He designed almost 500 chairs over the course of his life, over 100 which have gone into mass production. Having worked with wood from an early age and being trained as a cabinetmaker, he had a deep respect for the nature and inherent potential of wood. As a result, almost all of Wegner's creations are made of wood and are characterized by traditional joinery techniques including mortise and tenons, finger joints, and sculpted elements. He is one of the most prolific and renowned members of the movement that created what is referred to as the “Golden Age of modern Danish design.
