E.R.A. Herbst Postmodern Stool
Description
ERA Herbst Organic Postmodern Stool, Germany, circa 1990.
Organic postmodern stool by René Herbst, defined by its sculptural, flowing form and softly rounded edges. The piece reflects the playful experimentation of late twentieth-century design, when furniture began to blur the boundary between functional objects and small-scale sculpture.
The stool’s compact proportions and continuous curves give it a quiet presence while remaining practical as occasional seating or a side surface. Its organic shape feels both expressive and grounded, characteristic of the postmodern movement’s embrace of material and form. These were manufactured in a small quantity in the late 1980’s.
René Herbst (1891-1982) was a French industrial designer and architect who played a significant role in the development of modern design in France during the first half of the 20th century.
